One of the things I love the most is helping my clients create content - specifically beautiful designs in Canva that you can use for your Ads, Social Media posts and Lead Magnets. I often get asked, "what are the top tools you use every day to run your business as a Virtual Assistant."

So I'm here with the answers!

Here are my top 5 favorite tools, including why I love them and what you can do with them. I highly recommend checking out each of these tools and using them for your own business.

▫️Canva- I use this daily for all things design-related. You can literally create anything and everything you need from social media images, presentations, digital flyers, cards, etc. Canva is a great tool if you are looking to add social media management to your list of VA services. You can create your social media images and even use their content planner tool to easily schedule posts for you and your clients.

▫️Asana- I started using Asana at the last company I worked with and it has been a complete game-changer. I use Asana for everything from paying my bills to setting reminders to do tasks for clients. In fact, all of my clients are now using Asana as well. Simply put, you need to sign up too!

▫️Last Pass- Keeping track of all your passwords has never been easier than it is with Last Pass! I don’t know about you, but I have the hardest time keeping track of passwords. Before, I was the queen of scrolling through the 37,463,746 notes on my phone to find the password I was looking for. Now, with Last Pass, it’s so simple. And, it's extremely secure, so no need to worry about that.

▫️WordPress- Ok, I have a love/hate relationship with WordPress. I love it because I feel there are so many more capabilities and plugins than other website builders. But if you’re a beginner, it can be complicated. However, I do feel everything is figure-out-able if that’s even a phrase? Haha!

▫️Loom- I use this probably 10 times a day with my clients. Loom has a google chrome extension that lets you easily click to record yourself or your screen. It makes working remotely with clients so simple.

One of my clients once gave this piece of advice in her facebook group that really stuck with me over the past year or so. It was “Things don’t have to be perfect to work. So many of us get caught up in wanting things to be perfect that it holds us back from taking any action at all. But here’s the thing… When you take imperfect action, that allows you to get feedback much faster, to see if it’s even worth pursuing to make perfect.”

Can you relate to this? 🙋‍♀️ I sure know I can!

I have been on a few different discovery calls recently and the one thing they all said was “I need to make a list of things I can have you help me with.” This made me realize something a lot of business owners have in common. Figuring out not only what they can easily delegate to their VA,
but how they can efficiently delegate the tasks to ensure they get a good return on their VA.

This is exactly why I have created a new free guide called my “little black book of 60 ideas of things you can outsource.”

This is also a great example of me taking imperfect action.🤭 I couldn’t get the mobile version working correctly, but I will especially now that it’s posted AND if you like the guide, I will be creating more free resources for you!

A lot of people ask me “how do you even get star

A lot of people ask me “how do you even get started as a Virtual Assistant.” They say “I want to do this, but I have no clue where to even begin. The answer: Facebook groups. Join them and join a lot of them! In my humble opinion, it’s the easiest way to network and find your next clients.

If you’re looking for a career change and have thought about becoming a Virtual Assistant, I would 100% recommend doing it. When you become a Virtual Assistant you work one-on-one with clients and offer services that you’re not only good at, but you get to choose what you LOVE to do. I am a firm believer that everyone out there has SOMETHING that they are good at.

Think about the things that you absolutely LOVE to do. Is it to communicate with people on Instagram, graphic design, write emails, talk on the phone, whatever it is you really enjoy - write those things down.

Once you have a list of things you enjoy doing and you feel good at, that will help narrow down your services. You can then determine your pricing, create a website and start looking for clients.

While it might be tempting to offer every service under the moon when you start, narrow it down to a few different things and get really good at it. Then you can start to identify where more opportunities are.

Quality over Quantity. My husband always used to tell me this and it’s stuck with me over the years in my professional and personal life. You can have 50 friends, but there are only a few good ones that will always be there at the drop of a hat no matter when you need them right?

This same quote goes for clients and your work. I am a firm believer if you have more clients than you can handle, your quality of work could be sacrificed. Of course this depends on the work you do and if you have the ability to outsource so it may not be the same for each business. For me personally and currently working as a one man band here, I’ve found my sweet spot of clients is 6 max. Therefore I always try to keep my client load under 6 clients and each of those clients have a max amount of hours allotted for the month. For me, this is just to ensure I have extra time during my week to help them out with anything that comes up. What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree or disagree? What have you found is the most helpful at juggling your workload? For me, it’s Asana. It’s been a game changer at keeping up with it all! Praise the lord for Asana that’s all I’m saying!

Hello 2021! What a crazy year it’s already been

Hello 2021! What a crazy year it’s already been to say the least! My word for 2020 summed up was perspective. I feel for many of us, last year was very challenging and difficult to say the least but for me it really put things in perspective. It’s kind of like the phrase “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” and I feel that’s exactly what we did. When we were stuck inside, we were snuggled on the couch as a family watching movies (mostly toy story on repeat). When restaurants closed, we had picnics outside. Since having covid and losing my taste and smell, I’ve eaten more salads than I ever had in my entire life, and grocery delivery became my new favorite thing. Last but definitely not least, when I was laid off my 9-5 job last year, I took matters into my own hands, started networking like never before, applied for my LLC and Julie Horne Consulting was born. Now I am helping 5 amazing companies and I am loving it!

My word for 2021 is balance. I am focusing more on my health and eating “healthier” but finding a balance in it. That’s what it’s all about right? I am also forcing myself to slow down again this year, taking a little time for myself each week to do something I love. Whether it’s just a short walk, learning more about things I’m passionate about, spending time on my Etsy shop, I want to find the joy in the small things and not just spend all my time helping clients (which I LOVE by the way) but also time to invest in myself.

One of my former colleagues would always say this and it's stuck with me throughout my life and career. It is honestly so true. If you live by these words in all that you do, you will find more success. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is when you will find real joy and possibility.

Take the risks because if you don't you will never know what you may be missing out on. If it doesn't work out the way you hoped, you just learn from it and it will only make you that much better in the long run.

I landed my first position as an Executive Assista

I landed my first position as an Executive Assistant in 2013. I was working for a timeshare company and assisted the President of Sales and Marketing. Oftentimes, I would hear the term “only an assistant”. For me, I looked at it as if I was one of the many reasons our executive office’s ship kept sailing. I always thought “if people knew what really went on behind the scenes of an Executive Assistant they would know they don’t get paid enough!” That Executive Assistant position was a stepping stone that enabled me to learn so many different aspects of assisting C-level executives. I was promoted at the same company and then my husband got a job offer in Texas so it suddenly felt like I had to start over in my career.

For the past four years, I have worked in a remote capacity all while being a mom to two kiddos. 💪 After moving to Texas, I was a freelancer for a while and one of the freelancing positions turned into another full-time job which I loved. Then guess what? Covid-19 hit and all of the hard work felt as if it was all for nothing again overnight. Suddenly I had this ah-ha moment. If it wasn’t for me starting to freelance in 2016, I wouldn’t even be where I was today.

Fast forward to today, I have landed four new clients - all from networking and word of mouth through well served clients. This “side gig” all started with working a couple hours a week and it’s been evolving slow and steady ever since.

I am telling you all of this because this all goes to show that it’s better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward.

If you’re looking for a new job or a career change, put yourself out there. Start as a freelancer, learn all the things, discover what you love doing and DO MORE OF IT!
